FAQs

What is PenguinStaff?

We are an employment agency that fills positions in the hospitality industry. Our clients include hotel chains and corporations located throughout the Washington Metropolitan area.

What types of jobs do you offer?

PenguinStaff primarily staffs positions at the front of the house (i.e. waiters and bartenders) or back of the house (i.e. cooks, stewards, and dishwashers). We also staff some light industrial jobs such as moving, set-up, packing, and production work. Many of our banquet positions are offered on an on-call basis.

What does on-call mean?

You decide whether or not you would like to accept each job assignment. When a job becomes available, one of our dispatchers will contact you and offer you the position. The dispatcher will provide you with the date, time, location, and pay rate for the particular job. If you accept the job assignment, you are considered booked for that assignment.

How much money will I make?

Our positions vary in pay rate depending upon the requirements of the job and level of the position. Our best-paying positions are for skilled cooks, tuxedo waiters and bartenders, who earn $12 to $17 per hour.

How do I register with PenguinStaff?

You can apply by visiting our office during our walk-in hours or call to schedule an appointment. Since many of our assignments are for one day events, it is recommended that you bring documents necessary to complete work eligibility forms. If you have a tuxedo or chef jacket, you should also bring it in with you.

Is the PenguinStaff office Metro accessible?

We are two blocks away from the King Street Metro, on Duke Street, on the same side of the street as Whole Foods, right past the Marriott Residence Inn.

How long will it take to get a job with PenguinStaff?

That depends on your experience and flexibility. The more flexible you are regarding your availability, the type of job, pay rate, and location; the easier it is for us to find you a job assignment.

Should I call in for positions?

Yes. Call in at (202) 347-1234 and leave a voicemail to update your availability for the week. We will update your schedule and contact information into our database, so that when we have a job that fits your skills and schedule, our scheduling agents will notify you immediately.

Does PenguinStaff offer full-time or regular employment?

Yes. We do place staff into full-time positions when requested by our clients. Clients also request specific employees for their on-call positions, so it is possible to be a preferred employee at a client site and receive on-call work on a consistent basis.

How often will I be paid?

PenguinStaff pays on a weekly basis. Our work week runs from Monday through Sunday. Timesheets for the previous week are due every Monday by 5:00pm. Paychecks are issued the following Wednesday and are mailed to your house.

Does PenguinStaff provide training and uniforms?

Yes. We provide uniforms and training to all interested associates.
